A grudge fixture between two top
contenders and a novelty Free Kick Challenge will herald the Match Day 2
of the 2014 Nigeria Telecommunications Games this weekend at the Legacy
Pitch of the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.
The Free Kick Challenge is a contest
amongst teams made up of three outfield players and a goalkeeper with
each team taking turns to aim and score beyond the free kick wall formed
by two of the three outfield players on the opposing team.
“We have sought to spice up each Match
Day at the Nigeria Telecommunication Games to offer fans and players
from other industry sectors as well as the general public a variety of
activities to make the outing memorable,” the Head, Corporate Games at MediaVision Limited, organisers of the tournament, explained Ugo Osuji said.
But the biggest news of the day is the coming of Alcatel to the 2014 fixtures having not been involved in any game
on the opening day. Alcatel are thus set to open their account with a
tie against Airtel, 1-0 winners on opening day against former champions,
MTN Nigeria.
The fixture is an opportunity for Alcatel’s duo of Olalekan Bankole and Chuka Odiamma to stake a claim as one of the games’
lethal strikers having scored one each last year to help their team
finish in third place. Interestingly, Odiamma scored the lone goal in
their last year’s defeat of Airtel. This though is a new and improved
Airtel that have made it clear they are in the competition to claim the football trophy.
